OTL – FUKUSHIMA

Late in 2015 Oxford Technoligies Ltd (OTL) now owned by Veolia Nuclear Solutions, were awarded a contract by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to bring its remote handling expertise to assist in the decommissioning work at the Fukushima Daiichi NPS site. With a strong background in remote handling equipment in hostile environments, OTL were correctly identified to be well placed to take on such a challenge.

Following the success of the FGMSP SSCC project within Sellafield which OTL and FIRMA collaborated on earlier in 2015, it was a natural choice for FIRMA to support a concept design to address the Fukushima challenge. Specifically, the physical scale and complexity of the structure demanded a lightweight, structurally efficient design, similar to the airframe structures that FIRMA have a particular pedigree in delivering.

The ongoing design, currently in development with OTL, is considered to be a prime option within Fukushima. FIRMA is proud to have made a significant contribution to this structural design, proving that our skills offer our clients a way forward, to support some of the most challenging and immediate engineering projects in the world.
