Graduate Mechanical Engineer – MEng or BEng (2:1 or above Full Time / 2:2 or above Part Time)

Our clients and projects are varied, spanning Aerospace civil and military, Nuclear Newbuild and Decommissioning and Research and Development and our team is growing.

As a result of our success, we are looking to recruit an open-minded graduate engineer for an initial period of 12 months to learn and grow with the company with a view to a long-term employment opportunity.

The Candidate: If you’ve graduated from a mechanical, aerospace, or mechatronics engineering BEng or MEng and are interested in both creative design tasks and classic engineering activities such as formal reports and drawings then this could be the role for you.

Our small business is fast-moving, to keep up with client demand and our varied projects, so you need to be able to prioritise tasks and workloads whilst staying engaged.

You need to be able to find real working solutions whilst balancing functionality, structures, manufacturability and costs.

The ideal candidate should have the interpersonal skills to build professional relationships with clients and suppliers alike.

The Role: As a Micro SME, FIRMA can offer a much more varied role than what is typically encountered in larger organisations. Typical tasks may include:

  • Hand calculations – stress & structures bias
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) – various packages
  • Modelling using latest CAD packages
  • Production of formal drawings
  • Preparing presentations for clients and suppliers
  • Contributing technical knowledge to technical meetings
  • Working within ISO9001 quality system

Apprentice Mechanical Engineer – 3 A-Levels at A-C (or Equivalent), with at least 1 A-Level in Mathematics, Engineering, or Sciences (or equivalent). Experience in another engineering role/roles may be considered.

Degree Apprenticeship Details:

Disclosure: You will have to attend an entrance exam & interview at the AMRC Training Centre before beginning your course.

The Degree Apprenticeship portion of your career will span a period of 36+ months. There will be a block training period at the AMRC of 1-3 months. After the block training period, formal work/study will then begin the next September of your employment. The schedule will be as follows: work 3 days, study on day release for 1 day, & work shadow 1 day (i.e., on the job training).

The training will take place at AMRC Training Centre/Sheffield University. You will be expected to travel for the training although travel costs can be claimed for journeys that are special case (i.e. not to AMRC or UoS).

Upon successful examination & completion of the degree apprenticeship you will receive a foundation degree (yr1), a BEng in your chosen topic (yr3), & a level 6 apprenticeship qualification (yr3-5) in your chosen topic.

The Candidate: The position would ideally suit an applicant who is interested in design & engineering and able to apply him or herself with equal enthusiasm to the tasks ahead. The ability to maintain energy and enthusiasm amid frequently changing priorities is essential due to the small business environment.

Aerospace Stress Engineer – MEng or BEng

The Candidate: FIRMA Engineering are seeking an Aerospace Stress Engineer to join their growing team. The individual must have at least 5 years of stress engineering experience, with a significant amount of it in the aerospace industry.

The role would suit someone who is able to balance an appreciation of real working solutions which combine functionality, structures, manufacturability and costs.

The candidate should have an appreciation of how they can build relationships with clients and suppliers alike. A professional but approachable character would be a great asset.

The Role: The candidate will need to be able to analyse and design a wide range of airframe structures. The job will require dialogue with other associated disciplines and a proactive approach to structural design. Good report writing skills are essential with the ability to summarise problems and their solutions being vital. They need to have a good working knowledge of the following:

  • Hand Calculations and Methods
  • MSc Patran & Nastran or other suitable FEA package
  • CAD Design packages such as CATIA, Solidworks & Inventor
  • Microsoft Office, in particular Excel and VBA
  • Matchcad
  • Python or other programming languages
  • ISAMI experience is preferable

The role will require contributions in technical meetings and visits to the customers sites. Security clearance may be needed for some clients, so previous SC clearance will be useful. For this reason, all applicants must be UK nationals with the ability to gain the relevant security clearances.

As an experienced member of the team the candidate will be expected to support junior engineers and be part of the collaborative environment at FIRMA.

Aerospace Design Engineer – HND/HNC/MEng or BEng

The Candidate: FIRMA Engineering is seeking an Aerospace Design Engineer to join their growing team. The individual must have at least 8 years of design engineering experience, with a significant amount of it in the aerospace industry.

The Role: Develop, integrate, and implement technical solutions for some of our high-profile projects. The Design Engineer will help to ensure designs are compliant with all relevant customer, regulatory, and structural requirements and internal standards within the programme, schedule, and manufacturing constraints.

Have a shared responsibility in the design of structural components, identifying technical problems and creating technical solutions. The design engineer will be working with both metal and composite structures and different assembly techniques. The design engineer will work along side analysis engineers, manufacturing engineers, cost engineers and tooling engineers.

Working in all phases of a project, starting with the conceptual phase, the full-scale phase in which the detailed design is translated into product drawings/ models, up to the product maturation phase assisting with problems during manufacturing and proposing changes to the detailed design to enhance its functionality and reduce costs.

Work on the integration of all requirements and input from other engineering disciplines into the conceptual and detailed design, such that the product definition can be made, and a cost-efficient and producible design is achieved.

Use a variety of methods and tools, for example CAD (experience using CATIA V5, Solidworks & Inventor)

Senior Mechanical Engineer – MEng or BEng

Company: FIRMA Engineering Ltd is a privately owned Micro SME based in Sheffield which has developed an excellent reputation in supporting its clients in delivering bespoke mechanical design solutions within a wide range of industries.

The Candidate: FIRMA Engineering are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their growing team. The individual must have at least 10 years of mechanical engineering experience. It is preferable if the candidate has experience delivering in a broad range of sectors such as aerospace, nuclear, automotive and civil.

Essentials Skills: The candidate would need to demonstrate the following skills:

  • The ability to deliver real working solutions which balance the requirements of functionality, structural integrity, manufacturability, serviceability and costs.
  • A working knowledge of end-to-end solutions including evolution of concepts through the various stages to final delivery.
  • Ability to create & understand technical drawings and documentation to satisfy customer requirements within a ISO9001 framework.
  • Proficiency in at least one CAD Design package such as CATIA, Solidworks, Inventor, etc.
  • A strong focus on building and maintaining client and supplier relationships.
  • Strong organisational skills to manage spend profiles and timescales to support project goals in a dynamic environment.

Preferable Skills: The candidate would need to have, or demonstrate an interest in, developing the following skills:

  • Apprentice trained or demonstration of some hands-on experience in engineering activities.
  • Proficiency in at least one FEA package such as Msc Patran/Natsran, ANSYS, Hyperworks etc.
  • Microsoft Office, in particular Word & Excel.
  • A working knowledge of programming languages such as Python or VBA.
  • Working knowledge of industry codes such as the Eurocodes.
  • An understanding of load paths and structures, with a view to performing basic hand calculations.

Character: The role would suit someone with a range of personal traits including:

  • Flexibility – as a micro-SME serving multiple industries, the candidate would need to remain motivated in an environment subject to frequent change.
  • Creativity – an ability to generate viable alternative solutions.
